What is BMI?

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a numerical value calculated from a person's weight and height. It is commonly used as a screening measure to categorize weight relative to height.

How is BMI Calculated?

For metric measurements, BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared.

For example, if someone weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 metres tall:

For adults, BMI values are commonly grouped into the following categories:

• Underweight: BMI below 18.5
• Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
• Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9
• Obesity: BMI 30 or higher

If your weight is 70 kg and your height is 175 cm, your height is 1.75 metres.

A BMI of approximately 22.9 falls within the commonly used normal-weight range for adults.

Metric and Imperial BMI Calculation

The metric method uses kilograms and metres. The imperial method uses pounds and inches. This calculator supports both unit systems.

Is BMI an Accurate Measure of Health?

BMI is a useful screening measure, but it does not directly measure body fat or overall health. Factors such as muscle mass, age, sex, body composition and other health factors can affect how BMI should be interpreted.

BMI should therefore not be considered a diagnosis or a complete assessment of an individual's health.
